Nikki Lucas Faces Lawsuit Over Campaign Debt
New York State Assembly Member Nikki Lucas faces a lawsuit over more than $6,000 in legal bills from her 2021 New York City Council campaign. The case comes as Lucas seeks to lead the Brooklyn Democratic Party. It has raised questions about campaign finances and political accountability.
Lawsuit Focuses on Bills From Lucas’s 2021 Campaign
According to City & State New York, attorney Ed Hartzog sued Lucas in New York County Civil Court in July 2026. He is seeking payment for unpaid legal services.
The disputed bills include $1,500 for campaign compliance services and $4,651.84 for legal fees and expenses from August 2021. Lucas ran for City Council against Charles Barron but lost. She later won a special election for the state Assembly in 2022.
A court hearing set for September 30 was postponed until February 8, 2027. The report said Lucas did not appear at the earlier hearing.
Consultant Also Claims Campaign Owes Money
Political consultant Steve Kramer also told City & State that Lucas owes about $2,000 to his company, Get Out the Vote. The money is for voter outreach services provided during her 2021 campaign.
Kramer said he does not plan to sue over the amount. However, he questioned whether a candidate for county party chair should have unresolved campaign debts.
Lucas spokesperson Vernon Jones said the invoices are disputed and still under review. No conclusion about the disputed amounts should be drawn before the claims are resolved.
Brooklyn Democratic Party Leadership Dispute Continues
The lawsuit comes as Lucas faces a separate challenge over the leadership of the Brooklyn Democratic Party. Former chair Rodneyse Bichotte Hermelyn backed Lucas as her successor. However, some district leaders have challenged the process used to choose the next chair.
According to NY1, some party members voted to name Lucas chair during a virtual meeting. The meeting took place despite a court order blocking a leadership vote. Reform-minded members challenged the vote, leaving the leadership dispute unresolved.
The party also reported debts in its financial filings. A July 15 filing with the state Board of Elections showed $431,207.60 in cash. It also listed $288,587.47 owed to law firm Abrams Fensterman LLP and $41,462.50 owed to accounting firm Grassi.
What NYC Candidates Can Learn About Campaign Finances
People running for office in New York City need to manage campaign finances carefully. This includes tracking legal bills, paying vendors and keeping accurate records.
Unpaid bills do not automatically prove wrongdoing. Still, candidates can reduce disputes by keeping clear contracts, checking invoices and responding to payment concerns promptly. Clear financial records can also help build trust with voters, donors and party leaders.
Financial Questions May Affect Political Trust
The lawsuit and the party leadership dispute are separate matters. However, both have drawn attention to financial management and decision-making within Brooklyn politics.
The legal claims remain disputed, and the next court hearing is scheduled for February 8, 2027. The case highlights why clear financial records and fair leadership processes matter to candidates and political organizations.
