Mamdani Keeps NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch Amid Calls for Removal
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani says he has no plans to replace NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch, despite calls from some progressive allies for her removal after an October 8, 2026, shooting involving federal immigration agents. According to Spectrum News NY1, the dispute has raised questions about policing, immigration enforcement and accountability.
Mamdani Reaffirms His Support for Tisch
Mamdani said on October 13 that Tisch would remain police commissioner. He defended his decision by pointing to her record of addressing corruption within the NYPD and reducing crime across New York City.
Tisch stayed in the role after former Mayor Eric Adams left office in January 2026. Mamdani had previously faced scrutiny from different parts of the political spectrum over his decision to retain an official appointed under the previous administration.
ICE Shooting Triggers Calls for Leadership Changes
The controversy intensified after an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent shot and wounded Oscar Belgal during a federal enforcement operation in the Marble Hill area of New York City. A five-year-old child was in the vehicle but was reported physically unharmed, according to Reuters.
The NYPD was not involved in the shooting itself, but its response and conduct during the protests that followed drew criticism. Among those calling for Tisch’s removal were members of the Democratic Socialists of America, congressional candidate Darializa Avila Chevalier and City Council Member Carmen De La Rosa.
De La Rosa questioned whether the police response helped build trust with local communities. The NYPD said its Strategic Response Group did not respond to the protests or interact with demonstrators.
City Review Will Examine the Incident and Police Response
Mamdani announced a review covering the 24 hours surrounding the incident. According to NY1, it will examine the shooting, the NYPD’s response, the ensuing protests and ICE’s use of a private parking lot as a staging location.
The mayor said the review would also consider tools available to the city to protect immigrants. The announcement places the administration’s response to federal immigration enforcement alongside broader questions about police oversight and public trust.
What NYC Candidates Can Learn About Public Accountability
For people running for City Council or other NYC offices, the dispute illustrates the importance of explaining how public agencies should respond to controversial incidents. Candidates can set out clear positions on police oversight, community safety and cooperation between local and federal authorities.
They should also distinguish verified facts from allegations and explain what accountability measures they support. Public trust can depend not only on a policy position, but also on whether officials communicate transparently and respond to community concerns.
Mamdani’s decision keeps Tisch in place for now, while the planned review may shape further debate over policing and immigration enforcement in New York City. The issue demonstrates how local officials must balance agency leadership, public accountability and differing expectations within their constituencies.
